On this Saturday’s episode of, Philip Nothard is joined by Curtis Hutchinson, Editor of They discuss the latest headlines, including the an always popular subject of salaries, as the average dealer principal saw annual salary in 2016, including commission, rise 23.4% to £116,000 compared to the previous year.

Inchcape rated 5 in the Motor Trader Top 200 with annual turnover of £2.7bn, has introduced the package to retain its current 950 technicians while also attracting 350 new technicians to its business.

In other news, Rybrook Holdings has bought Paymill Motor Holdings, which operates a BMW and Mini and Motorrad motorcycle dealership in Wolverhampton. While, Holdcroft Motor Group has bought ALM Garages’ Hyundai business in Macclesfield for an undisclosed sum.

Auto Trader has rolled out its Price Indicators service across its website in a move it said would provide used car buyers with greater transparency. And, NFDA chairman Mark Squires, Eden Motors CEO Graeme Potts and Swansway Group director Peter Smyth are among the top car retailing speakers confirmed for the Motor Trader Summit on 12 July.

Ford is aiming to boost all-makes parts and servicing sales for dealers with the launch of the Omnicraft range of parts, whilst Vauxhall has relaunched its £2,000 Scrappage Allowance promotion for certain models ordered and registered before 30 June.

In other news, according to Jato Dynamics, April new car registrations dip 7% in Europe and JCT600 has recorded record turnover but a fall in profits for the year-ended 31 December 2016 citing the impact of pre-registered cars on new and used prices in the wider market.

Cap hpi revealed a year on year 5% increase in pre-registered cars in May. The automotive data experts studied 17 plate and 16 plate used vehicles advertised on digital platforms.

In other news, Vertu Motors has achieved record turnover and profit for the year ended 28 February, whilst Lookers’ used car business boomed in the first quarter with turnover increasing by 30% and Cambria Automobiles turned in a strong first half with underlying pre-tax profits up 21.7% to £5.6m.

On this Saturday’s episode of Motor Trade Radio, Philip Nothard and Derek Blair discuss the latest headlines from Motor Trader. This week, a big story for the industry broke, when individuals responsible for car clocking offences amounting to more than seven million miles have been successfully prosecuted.

In dealer news, Inchcape turned in a strong performance in the UK and Europe in 2016 with trading profit up 9.2% to £97.1m on turnover up 14.9% to £4.06bn. And Derbyshire-based Pentagon Group turned in flat pre-tax profits of £4m (£4.2m in 2015) in 2016 on turnover of £472m (£484m).

And Vertu has issued a robust full year trading update driven by strong performances in used cars and aftersales. Whilst Ford of Britain chairman and managing director Andy Barratt is forecasting a ‘bumper’ new car sales performance for the plate-change in March.

In other news, Land Rover dealers will be selling an all-new SUV later this year when the Velar model arrives in showrooms.

Finally, Derek and Philip discuss research from cap hpi, as dealer margins came under pressure in February while finance sales boomed.

In manufacturer news, Volkswagen has appointed Matt Benns as head of customer quality and network development and SsangYong has added three new dealers to its dealer network.

And the booming car finance market helped Black Horse turn in a strong performance in 2016 with turnover up 20% to £10.9bn. In other news, Arnold Clark continues to expand its Motorstore used car offer with the opening of a new site York.

Jaguar Land Rover has announced plans to boost its London sales operations by opening two new sites, including a flagship facility operated by Sytner, as well as significantly upgrading its existing showrooms in the capital.

They also look at reports that New car prices have risen by an average of 5.2% in the past seven months following the Brexit vote to leave the EU.

In another news, Britain’s used car market surged to record levels in 2016 with 8.2 million vehicles finding new owners, up 7.3% on the previous year. Pendragon saw underlying pre-tax profits rise 7.6% to £75.4m on turnover up 1.9% to £4.4bn for the year ending 31 December. And the group plans to open five used sales outlets in the first half of 2017 and is actively pursuing five additional sites for the second half.

This week, West Country Ford dealer Foray Motor Group is taking delivery of 350 extra Fiesta and Ka+ models worth £4m to pre-empt the new VED changes that take effect in 1 April, and Volkswagen is facing another group action in the UK over the emissions' issue.

Dealer group bosses are lobbying MPs next week to highlight the importance of the car retailing sector to the economy following the vote to leave the EU.

In another news, January saw a dip in the number of dealers reporting a monthly footfall increase in comparison to twelve months ago in the latest cap hpi report, and Hyundai has announced details of the first two customers to buy cars on its new 'Click to Buy' online platform.

As College Harwoods Group plans to buy land from Chichester College for a new Jaguar Land Rover business in Pulborough, Philip and Jim look at the novel ways dealer groups are locating land for new showrooms.

This week, Vauxhall is the latest high-profile name to join the line-up of the 2017 London Motor Show. Following the successful relaunch of the event in 2016, the show returns to Battersea Park with Motor Trader as the B2B media partner. New car registrations hit a new record with 2.69 million vehicles sold in 2016, with many commentators predicting a slowdown in 2017.

Lloyd Motor Group, the family-owned Carlise-based retailer, has acquired Clelands Jaguar for an undisclosed sum, and Lookers has bolstered its management team with the promotion of MD Nigel McMinn to the role of chief operating officer. McMinn joined Lookers in 2013 from Benfield.

In another news, Smart has started to sell cars online with deliveries direct to a customer’s home or local dealer within 12 days of credit acceptance, and thousands of UK motorists are to launch a lawsuit against Volkswagen over #dieselgate. The class action is led by UK law firm Harcus Sinclair UK which specialises in large group litigation.

cap hpi has confirmed the last printed edition of the iconic Black Book used car value guide will appear in February. At the same time, it will also phase out its Red and Green books, for commercial vehicles and motor cycles, in a move that will see the group complete its transition to a fully digital service.
